  46. The Geek Gadgets Version 1 CD-ROM (Amiga 
  47. Developers Environment) from Cronus, will contain a 
  48. developers release of p.OS and all necessary tools 
  49. for p.OS development. Using these tools, it is 
  50. possible to write programs that run on both p.OS 
  51. and AmigaOS using the same binary file.ÿ A shared 
  52. library that runs on both 
  53. operating systems provides applications with all 
  54. necessary ANSI C and POSIX support, while special 
  55. startup code allows programs to determine at startup 
  56. whether they are running on p.OS or AmigaOS and 
  57. make the appropriate system calls.ÿ Using this 
  58. technique, the development tools themselves run on 
  59. either operating system with negligible overhead or 
  60. increased binary size.

  62. The p.OS developer release requires an m68020 (or 
  63. higher) processor, a hard drive, and a minimum of 2 
  64. MB of RAM.  Applications developed for this 
  65. portable operating system are source code 
  66. compatible with p.OS ports to other architectures 
  67. such as the PowerPC.ÿ With a simple recompile, 
  68. developers of p.OS applications can reach the 
  69. entire installed base of p.OS users, regardless of the 
  70. underlying hardware.ÿ By porting to p.OS now, 
  71. developers will be able to take advantage of easy 
  72. migration to future p.OS releases on other 
  73. architectures and enjoy the benefits of hardware 
  74. independence (and a brighter market).
